“Show Up” Quilt

Returning to the classroom post pandemic was a struggle for all of us. Eighth graders led a community quilt project to help inspire us to continue persevering.

Pattern: “Show Up” Quilt Collaboration between Hunter’s Design Studio and artist Lisa Congdon.

Techniques: foundation paper piecing, applique, machine quilting, and machine binding.

Jump to timestamp 3:57 for the quilting action.

8th Grade: Social Justice Quilt

A quilt made of several appliqued blocks is hung on a fence. The appliqued blocks feature student work highlighting their social justice concern. The fence, metal shed behind the fence, and clips holding the quilt have orange highlights. The quilt has multiple appliqued blocks. The blocks have white backgrounds and are framed in black. Multicolored blocks make up the sashing between each appliqued block.

Modeled after quilts created by the Social Justice Sewing Academy, eighth graders made this quilt by designing and sewing individual blocks highlighting the causes about which they were personally passionate.

The last row of blocks were designed by students after the COVID pandemic started and students were learning from home over Zoom. For this reason, the final row was sketched by students but stitched by me. The blank square represents the students who disappeared completely from the educational system during this difficult time.

Techniques: raw edge hand applique. (I completed the piecing, quilting, and binding myself).

6th Grade: Activists Quilt

*not my students*

The same year that eighth grade made the quilt above, Adele Ann Eberwein had her sixth graders chose personal heroes/activists to research and represent on this quilt she then put together.

Techniques: raw edge hand applique. (Quilted & Pieced by Adele Ann Eberwein/FMQ added by me).

A quilt is shown hanging against a dark fence. The quilt has individual squares designed by students showing their personal hero activist (more recognizable ones include Super Deafy, Ruby Bridges, Greta Thurnberg, Cesar Chavez). The squares are sashed together with black fabric and framed in purple. A bright orange binding completes the quilt.

Both quilts were featured by the Quilt Alliance on their Textile Talks: Go Tell it at Textile Talks! in January of 2023. (The video should play at 27:44). There’s also an easter egg at timestamp 19:22!
